CAR is a collective for cycling, art, and research.

Under capitalist-imperialist structures, people are divided geographically, politically, and from the land itself. Living within these hegemonies can make it impossible to see them, as we are swept up in daily discomfort, disillusionment, and division from each other and the land of which we are a part.

CAR believes that in moving by bicycle we are afforded a clear perspective on this, and strengthen the bonds with people and land that are blocked from us. Cycling allows us to experience the world at a different speed, duration, & scale. This, as well as it’s low-impact and voluntarily-vulnerable nature, can unlock our minds from oppression as we connect to people and place.

CAR uses art and research about, by, and with cycling to actively practice and convey alternative ways of moving and being. This outcome can be as varied as publishing research and related cycling routes, collective work that questions, uses and requires movement, commissioning cycling related art pieces, curating and sharing resources, hosting events and generally riding bikes with intention.

By presenting these alternative ways of movement that are intentionally slow, vulnerable, situated, and connected, CAR aims to contribute in a small way to better identifying and ultimately rejecting divisive structures that surround us.

CAR creates, holds, and publishes projects centred around art, research, and cycling, as approach, method, and output. Examples of projects that CAR undertakes are:
