CAR’s artistic and research approach, methods, outputs, formats, are informed by cycling and cycle travel. It only makes sense then that the way we organise internally takes queues from cycle travel too.
Where most of the structures around us are driven (auto-centric word choice intended) by increasing speed, scale, and efficiency; we intend to organise around more flexible and human concepts of motion, duration, expansion. All inspired by riding (bi)cycles.
We have created a diagram of three (fluid) levels of potential involvement in CAR. It looks like this:
- HUB - The centre of CAR on which everything turns. Its internal workings are invisible, with 3-5 people working for the good of the whole, delegating and consulting.
- SPOKES - The committed group moving CAR. Individual threads hold a structure under tension. A rotating collection of artists, researchers, producers, movers, people; each bringing skills and perspectives to our projects.
- TYRE - CAR’s point of contact with the world. Traction, expansions, leaving traces. The network of people and places that support and convey our impact.
Launching pilot projects and experiments throughout 2025 and into 2026, the exact formation of the wheel of CAR is yet to be defined. For the time being we have created a form for you to express your interest in being part of the collective:
To give slightly more shape to how we imagine you being part of the group here are some example formats of collaboration:
- Publishing your “decentralised” cycling art/research projects on CAR’s platforms (physical & digital).
- Joining (online) feedback crit sessions to support development of each other’s practices.
- Helping organise CAR events (like a film screening, exhibition, workshop, or ride).
- Supporting & co-managing CAR “centralised” projects (such as Middle Ground: our yearly Artist in Residency).
- Sharing in the direction of the collective (with varying levels of influence and responsibility according to your proximity to CAR’s centre).
